Peleas de Gallos en Puerto Rico, Pictures taken in el Coliseo Gallistico ''Gallera'' de Cupey

Cock fights in Puerto Rico, a little bit of history:
Cock fights in Puerto Rico are very popular and they were brought to the Island of Puerto Rico by Spanish inmigrants in the 16th century. Shortly after, in 1770, it was enacted as a sport by the spanish governor Miguel de Muesas. However, after the

American invasion this sport was prohibited and continued as an underground event; In 1825, the first official cock rule was approved under command of Mr. Miguel de la Torre and later on revoked. Mr. Rafael Martinez-Nadal president of the senate under the USA government, known as the father of cock's law, legalized the games once again in 1933. The project was signed with a feather from by then a fine and famous cock named ''Justicia'' (justice). On August 2nd cocks' law # 1 was signed and in 1954 a law was signed by governor Luis Muñoz Marin. From the almost 120 galleras (fighting pits) in Puerto Rico, the oldest one is located in the town of Vega Alta, this one is among the oldest ones in the Caribbean as well. In 1996, cock trainers were recognized in the town of Maricao and the cocks festival was born under the approval of the cocks' commission; The cock festival is celebrated in Vega Alta from October 15 to the 17 with kiosks, crafts, a dominoes tournament and a very nice talent show.

The following pictures of Cock Fights (peleas de Gallos) were taken in La Gallera de Cupey, Puerto Rico.
