Pictures of Flor de Maga, Puerto Rico

(Our National Flower)

(Thespecia grandiflora; Maga grandiflora; Montezuma)

The Maga tree either in the wild or cultivated, is originally from Puerto Rico. It is quite abundant in the lime and humid forests. This tree was introduced in a few countries in the caribbean and in the south of Florida. It can reach between 9 to 15 meters high (30 to 50 feet), the outer section of the tree is thick with many deep grooves. It is a big tree with ''heart'' shaped leaves it, produces a round fruit that becomes hard and does not open when ripe. The tree blooms with 5 petals red flowers all year long and its wood has been used to make light furniture and musical instruments. This tree can be found in almost any Puerto Rican public forest being the municipalities of Patillas and Morovis where it prospers the most. The flower from this tree, ''The Maga Flower'' is also known in the West area of Puerto Rico as ''Flor de Candelaria''. The Maga flower is a Puerto Rican simbol and our national flower.
